Malaysia 7-Day Itinerary 2026 — Kuala Lumpur, Penang & Langkawi
Malaysia is one of Southeast Asia’s most rewarding all-rounders — a futuristic capital, a UNESCO heritage city of street food, and a tropical island of beaches, all easy to combine and friendly to Indian travellers (with familiar food and widely spoken English). This 7-day itinerary covers Kuala Lumpur, the foodie city of Penang and the island of Langkawi, with transport notes throughout.
How to reach Malaysia
Fly into Kuala Lumpur (KLIA) (✈️) directly from many Indian cities. Within Malaysia, this plan uses cheap domestic flights (✈️) and an optional train (🚆) for the KL–Penang leg. Indians should check the current entry requirement and complete the digital arrival card before travel.
Day 1 — Arrive Kuala Lumpur 🛬
Land in KL and settle in the Bukit Bintang/KLCC area. Evening at the Petronas Twin Towers and KLCC park fountains, with dinner at Jalan Alor’s buzzing street-food lane.
Day 2 — Kuala Lumpur sights
See the Batu Caves (the towering golden Murugan statue and cave temple — a major Hindu site), Merdeka Square and the old colonial core, the Islamic Arts Museum, and the views from the KL Tower or the SkyBridge. Evening shopping and food in Bukit Bintang. KL has excellent vegetarian and Indian food.
Day 3 — KL to Penang ✈️/🚆
Travel to Penang — a short flight (✈️) or a scenic train + transfer (🚆) to George Town. Spend the afternoon wandering the UNESCO-listed streets, famous street-art murals and clan houses.
Day 4 — Penang food & heritage
Penang is Malaysia’s food capital — graze through hawker centres (Little India, Gurney Drive), visit the Kek Lok Si Temple, the Penang Hill funicular, and colourful temples and mosques that reflect the island’s mix of cultures. Vegetarians eat exceptionally well here.
Day 5 — Penang to Langkawi ✈️/⛴️
Hop to Langkawi by short flight (✈️) or ferry (⛴️). Check into a beach resort near Pantai Cenang and unwind on the sand for the evening.
Day 6 — Langkawi island day
Ride the Langkawi SkyCab cable car to the SkyBridge for rainforest-and-sea views, take an island-hopping boat tour or a mangrove geopark cruise, and relax on the beaches. Langkawi is also duty-free, popular for shopping.
Day 7 — Depart 🛫
A final beach morning, then fly back to KL to connect to your international flight home (🛫), or depart directly if schedules allow.
Transport summary
The trip leans on cheap, frequent domestic flights to save time across the peninsula and to the island, with a train option for the KL–Penang leg and a ferry alternative to Langkawi. Grab (ride-hailing) is handy within cities.
What it costs & tips
Malaysia is good value: budget travellers manage modestly on hostels, hawker food and buses; mid-range adds resorts, flights and tours. Carry light tropical clothing, sun protection and a rain layer. English is widely spoken. Respect temple and mosque dress codes (cover shoulders/knees, scarves at mosques). Book Langkawi resorts and the SkyCab ahead in peak season.
