Uttarakhand 6-Day Itinerary 2026 — Nainital, Mussoorie & Rishikesh
Uttarakhand’s Kumaon and Garhwal hills pack lakes, ridgetop views, yoga capitals and the holy Ganga into one accessible Himalayan circuit. This 6-day itinerary links three favourites — Nainital, Mussoorie and Rishikesh — into a relaxed loop from Delhi, with drive notes between each base. For more, see our India travel guides.
How to reach
This circuit starts and ends from Delhi by road, using a private car/taxi (🚗) throughout. Alternatively, train to Kathgodam (for Nainital) and Haridwar/Dehradun (for Mussoorie/Rishikesh) and use local taxis. Roads are winding in the hills, so plan unhurried days.
Day 1 — Delhi to Nainital 🚗
Drive from Delhi to Nainital (🚗 ~300 km, 7–8 hours). Settle by Naini Lake and enjoy an evening boat ride and a stroll along Mall Road.
Day 2 — Nainital
Boat on the lake, ride the ropeway to Snow View Point, visit Naina Devi Temple and Tiffin Top, and optionally day-trip to the quieter Sattal and Bhimtal lakes. Overnight in Nainital.
Day 3 — Nainital to Mussoorie 🚗
A long but scenic transfer to Mussoorie (🚗 ~7–8 hours, via the Doon valley). The “Queen of the Hills” greets you with ridge views; settle in and walk the Mall Road and Camel’s Back Road at sunset.
Day 4 — Mussoorie
Ride the cable car to Gun Hill, visit Kempty Falls, the quaint Landour bazaar and its colonial-era lanes, and Lal Tibba viewpoint. Enjoy the cafés and bakeries that give Mussoorie its charm.
Day 5 — Mussoorie to Rishikesh 🚗
Descend to Rishikesh (🚗 ~3–3.5 hours), the yoga capital on the Ganga. Walk the iconic Laxman Jhula and Ram Jhula bridges, explore the riverside temples and cafés, and attend the magical evening Ganga Aarti at Triveni Ghat or Parmarth Niketan.
Day 6 — Rishikesh, return to Delhi 🚗
Optional morning adventure — white-water rafting on the Ganga, a short yoga session, or a visit to the Beatles Ashram. Then drive back to Delhi (🚗 ~6 hours) or continue to Haridwar/Dehradun to fly out.
Transport summary
The loop runs on a private car; the Nainital–Mussoorie leg is the longest, so start early and break for views. Substitute trains to Kathgodam and Dehradun if you prefer to shorten road time, using local taxis at each base.
What it costs & tips
Budget travellers do this on shared transport and guesthouses; mid-range adds a private taxi and better hotels. Carry layers (hills are cool year-round, cold in winter) and rain gear in shoulder seasons. Avoid the peak monsoon for landslide risk. Book ahead for summer/long weekends, and start hill drives early to beat traffic on narrow roads.
