IDFC FIRST WOW! Black Credit Card Review

IDFC FIRST Bank · FD-backed Premium · Mastercard World

Our score: 8.0 / 10
Annual fee: ₹750 + GST (waived on ₹1.5L spend)
Forex: 0% on all international spends
Welcome bundle: ₹5,000+ on joining-fee payment
Lounge + UPI virtual + 0% forex
Last reviewed: April 2026. Verified against the official IDFC FIRST WOW! Black product page (idfcfirst.bank.in/credit-card/wow-black-credit-card). The card has been re-launched as a fee-paying premium tier of the WOW family — no longer a lifetime-free secured card. The optional FD link still exists to boost the credit limit, but the headline product is now positioned around 0% forex, lounge access and a ₹5,000+ welcome bundle. Major repositioning vs older versions floating around the web.

TL;DR

The IDFC FIRST WOW! Black Credit Card is the premium tier of IDFC’s WOW range — repositioned in 2025-26 as a fee-paying card with 0% forex markup, complimentary airport lounge access, a ₹5,000+ welcome bundle, and an optional FD link to boost your credit limit. Annual fee is ₹750 + GST (waived on ₹1.5L of annual spends). Earn rates are up to 4 RP per ₹150 on retail spend, 3 RP per ₹150 on UPI, with a 33% / 20% bonus on hotel / flight bookings made through the IDFC FIRST Bank mobile app. The redemption rate is 1 RP = ₹0.50 when redeemed for travel inside the IDFC app — making the effective cash-equivalent return ~1.3% on retail and ~1% on UPI, which is competitive for this fee tier.

The standout structural perks are 0% forex (rare without going to a true LTF forex card like Scapia) and the complimentary UPI-enabled virtual credit card issued from day one. Trip cancellation cover (up to ₹10,000/year) and 25% movie ticket discount round it out. Catches: the welcome bundle is mostly partner vouchers (real cash value depends on whether you’d have spent at MakeMyTrip / Lenskart / Mokobara anyway), the renewal waiver requires ₹1.5L spend, and reward redemption value drops sharply outside the IDFC app’s travel booking flow.

Pros & cons

What we like
  • 0% forex markup on every international transaction — rare at the ₹750 fee tier; matches Scapia and beats almost everything else under ₹2,000
  • Welcome bundle worth ₹5,000+ on joining-fee payment: Lenskart Gold Max, MakeMyTrip discount, ₹500 travel voucher, EazyDiner Prime, Mokobara discount, 5% EMI cashback
  • Up to 4 RP per ₹150 on retail spend + 3 RP per ₹150 on UPI — most cards don’t reward UPI at all
  • 33% bonus reward points on hotel bookings + 20% bonus on flight bookings via the IDFC FIRST Bank app
  • Complimentary UPI-enabled virtual credit card linked from day one — pay via UPI QR using your credit limit
  • Optional FD link to boost or build your credit limit (the FD continues to earn IDFC’s standard FD interest)
  • Extras: trip cancellation cover up to ₹10,000/year, 25% movie discount, 1% fuel surcharge waiver, roadside assistance worth ₹1,399, ₹2 lakh personal accident cover
  • Renewal fee waived on ₹1.5L annual spend — the lowest spend bar for waiver among premium-tier cards
Watch out for
  • Not lifetime free — this is a fee-paying card now (₹750 + GST joining + ₹750 + GST annual; was a different product when it launched)
  • Welcome bundle is mostly partner vouchers; real cash value depends on whether you’d use MakeMyTrip, Lenskart, Mokobara anyway
  • Reward redemption value drops sharply outside the IDFC app’s travel booking flow (statement credit / catalog rates are lower than 1 RP = ₹0.50)
  • Reward earning excluded on rent, fuel, wallet, EMI conversions, government / education / insurance — typical Indian-card carve-outs
  • Lounge access count and per-quarter caps are modest for a “premium” card; check the latest schedule on the official page
  • UPI virtual card runs on RuPay (UPI rule) — earn rate on UPI spends is 3 RP per ₹150, not 4× — and acceptance abroad on the UPI card is limited to UPI-on-RuPay markets

Eligibility & documents

Income (salaried)

Net monthly income generally ₹35,000+ for the entry tier; metros usually need higher. Lower-income applicants can choose the FD-backed route to bypass income underwriting.

Self-employed

Latest ITR / business profile; bureau-driven underwriting. The FD-backed route is also available for self-employed without strong ITR history.

Age

21 to 60 years (salaried); 21 to 65 years (self-employed).

Credit score

CIBIL 720+ recommended for clean unsecured approvals. With FD link, the bank’s credit score requirement is much lighter — useful if you’re rebuilding credit or new-to-credit.

FD route (optional)

Link a new or existing IDFC FIRST FD; credit limit is set as a percentage of the FD value (typically up to 100%). The FD remains a standard IDFC FD and earns the prevailing FD interest rate.

Documents

PAN, Aadhaar, recent bank statements / salary slips (3 months) or last 2 years’ ITR, address proof. Mostly digital onboarding via the IDFC FIRST Bank app.

Rewards structure

Earn IDFC FIRST Reward Points (RP) on every eligible spend. The card has a tiered earn structure plus a booking-channel bonus when you book travel through the IDFC FIRST Bank mobile app.

Spend categoryEarn rateEffective % (at app travel redemption, 1 RP = ₹0.50)
General retail (online + offline)Up to 4 RP per ₹150~1.33%
UPI spends (via the linked virtual UPI credit card)Up to 3 RP per ₹150~1.0%
Hotel bookings via IDFC FIRST Bank appEarn rate + 33% bonus RPs~1.77% (4× × 1.33 ≈ 5.3 RP/₹150)
Flight bookings via IDFC FIRST Bank appEarn rate + 20% bonus RPs~1.6%
Excluded categories (rent, fuel, wallet, EMI conversion, cash advance, government, education, insurance)0 RP0%

How RPs convert to real value

  • Best rate: 1 RP = ₹0.50 when redeemed against travel bookings inside the IDFC FIRST Bank mobile app (the “FIRST Rewards Gallery” travel section).
  • Statement credit / catalog redemption: Lower per-RP value — typically ~₹0.25 per RP for statement credit. Use only if you don’t book travel via the app.
  • Validity: IDFC FIRST RPs do not have a fixed expiry date as long as the card account is active and in good standing — far more user-friendly than HDFC / SBI 24-36 month expiries.

Why “up to” matters

The official site uses “up to 4 RP per ₹150” and “up to 3 RP per ₹150 on UPI” framing. Earn rate may step down for high-volume users beyond a monthly threshold; verify the exact tier on the current Card Member Agreement before banking on it for a high-value spend month.

Welcome benefits & ongoing perks

Triggered by paying the joining fee on the card.

BenefitValue
Lenskart Gold Max — 1-year complimentary membership₹800
5% cashback on first EMI conversion within 30 daysUp to ₹1,000
₹500 instant voucher on first travel booking via IDFC FIRST app₹500
Up to ₹1,500 instant discount on flights / hotels / buses via MakeMyTripUp to ₹1,500
Flat 10% off on Mokobara websiteVariable
3-month EazyDiner Prime membership₹1,095
Total advertised value₹5,000+

Each component requires you to actually transact at that partner — a Mokobara discount is only valuable if you’d buy luggage there anyway. The two near-cash components are the ₹1,000 EMI cashback (real money if you have an EMI conversion) and the ₹500 travel voucher (real money on a flight you’d book anyway).

Ongoing app-bonus stack

  • 33% bonus RPs on hotel bookings via IDFC FIRST Bank mobile app
  • 20% bonus RPs on flight bookings via the same app
  • Both stack with the base 4 RP/₹150 retail rate, lifting effective hotel return to ~1.77% and flight return to ~1.6% (cash-equivalent)

Travel & lounge benefits

Airport lounge access

Complimentary airport lounge access via the DreamFolks network. Check the live limit and per-quarter cap on the official page — IDFC has revised the count for the WOW family more than once in the last 18 months.

Trip cancellation cover

Reimbursement of up to ₹10,000 per year on cancelled trips booked on the card — useful for monsoon-season domestic flights and last-minute changes.

0% forex markup

No forex markup on any international transaction — the card’s biggest structural perk for international travellers. Matches Scapia at this fee point.

App bonus on travel

33% bonus RPs on hotel bookings + 20% bonus RPs on flight bookings via the IDFC FIRST Bank mobile app. Also: 1 RP = ₹0.50 on travel redemptions, the best in-card RP rate.

Movie tickets

25% off (up to ₹100) on movie tickets, once per month, via District by Zomato.

Roadside assistance

Round-the-clock roadside assistance worth ₹1,399 per year — vehicle breakdown calls, towing, etc.

Insurance & protection

CoverLimit
Personal accident insuranceUp to ₹2 lakh
Trip cancellation cover (annual)Up to ₹10,000
Lost card liability protectionUp to ₹25,000 (after reporting card lost / stolen to bank)

Insurance is a convenience layer rather than a comprehensive travel-insurance substitute — for international trips beyond a quick weekend, buy a dedicated travel insurance policy.

Dual card setup — UPI virtual + physical

The WOW! Black ships with two cards under one credit limit:

  • Physical Visa Signature card: Use online and offline at any merchant globally that accepts Visa.
  • Complimentary virtual UPI-enabled credit card (RuPay): Linked to your credit limit, usable via any UPI app to pay at QR / VPA / phone-number QR — all spends earn 3 RP per ₹150.

This is genuinely useful in India where UPI is the dominant offline payment rail. Most credit cards force you to swipe / tap; with the WOW! Black, you can pay your local kirana store via UPI QR and still earn reward points.

Usage terms & fine print

Excluded categories (no RP)

Rent, fuel, wallet loads, EMI conversions, cash advances, government / utility / education / insurance payments. These also do not count toward the ₹1.5L annual fee waiver in most cases.

FD-link rules

Linking an FD is optional. If linked, the FD acts as collateral; credit limit is typically up to 100% of the FD value. The FD continues to earn IDFC’s standard FD interest. Closing the card releases the FD lien.

App-bonus eligibility

The 33% / 20% travel bonus RPs apply only to bookings made through the IDFC FIRST Bank mobile app’s travel section, not third-party portals. The transaction must be settled to qualify.

Renewal waiver

Annual fee is waived if eligible spend in the prior anniversary year crosses ₹1.5 lakh. Excluded categories may not count — confirm against the current MITC.

Interest-free period

Up to ~48 days when previous bill is paid in full. Carrying a balance kicks in revolving interest at the schedule on the MITC.

Closure

In-app or via PhoneBanking. Settle dues, redeem RPs, then request closure. If FD-linked, the lien releases on closure confirmation. Confirmation typically inside 7-10 working days.

How much will the card actually pay you?

Move the spend sliders to your real annual numbers. RPs are valued at ₹0.50 per RP (the best rate, against travel bookings inside the IDFC FIRST app). Statement-credit redemption is roughly half this value.

Total annual spend₹0

For pure 0% forex at sub-₹2,000 fee with airport lounge access + UPI integration, this card is the closest competitor to Scapia — Scapia wins on the lifetime-free pricing and the 20% Scapia app travel bonus, while WOW! Black wins on the broader Visa Signature acceptance, the ongoing IDFC app discount stack, and the dual UPI virtual card.

Who it’s for

  • International traveller who wants 0% forex without committing to LTF — you’re willing to pay ₹885/year for the Visa Signature acceptance and richer lounge / lifestyle layer than Scapia offers.
  • IDFC FIRST Bank app user — you’d already book hotels and flights through the bank’s app; the 33% / 20% bonus stack and ₹0.50/RP travel redemption rate compound over a year.
  • UPI-heavy spender — you want a credit card that earns reward points on UPI QR scans, not just card swipes. The complimentary virtual UPI card delivers this from day one.
  • Predictable ₹1.5L+ spender — easy bar to clear for the renewal waiver, which makes the card effectively free year 2 onward.
  • FD-route applicant — new-to-credit or rebuilding profiles who want a premium-feature card without strict income underwriting can opt for the FD link.

Skip if: you book travel outside the IDFC app (no bonus stack), you don’t spend ₹1.5L/year (the fee will hit annually), you prefer a true LTF card (Scapia is structurally cheaper), or your spending is heavy on excluded categories like rent / fuel / wallet.

How to apply & cancel

Application

  1. Go to the IDFC FIRST WOW! Black product page or apply via the IDFC FIRST Bank mobile app.
  2. Submit basic KYC (PAN, Aadhaar). Choose unsecured or FD-backed flow.
  3. Unsecured: upload income documents (3-month salary slips or last 2 years’ ITR). FD-backed: open a new IDFC FIRST FD or link an existing one via the app.
  4. Bank’s underwriting decisions in minutes for pre-approved customers; up to 5-10 working days for new-to-bank.
  5. Card dispatched and reaches you in 5-7 working days; activate via the app or PhoneBanking.
  6. Pay the joining fee within the first cycle to unlock the welcome bundle (Lenskart, MakeMyTrip, EazyDiner, etc.).

Closure

  1. Settle outstanding dues; redeem any pending RPs (validity is open as long as the card is active).
  2. If FD-linked, note that closure will release the FD lien.
  3. Request closure via the IDFC FIRST Bank app or PhoneBanking; confirmation in 7-10 working days.
  4. Destroy the physical card after closure is confirmed in writing.

The verdict

8.0 / 10 — at ₹885 all-in, the WOW! Black is one of the best-value premium cards in India for the international-traveller / app-first user. Zero forex markup at this fee tier is the headline structural perk; layered on top is a ₹5,000+ welcome bundle, complimentary lounge access, a UPI-enabled virtual credit card, trip cancellation cover, and an IDFC-app travel-bonus stack that compounds nicely over a year. The renewal fee waiver at ₹1.5L spend is one of the lowest waiver bars in the market. The card is held back from a higher score by the exclusion list (rent/fuel/wallet/EMI earn nothing), the welcome bundle being mostly partner vouchers, and the redemption-rate cliff outside the IDFC app. If you’re choosing between this and Scapia: take Scapia for the cheapest 0% forex play, take WOW! Black if you want a richer perks stack and Visa Signature acceptance and don’t mind ₹885/year. For most users, both can co-exist in the wallet — Scapia for forex / app travel, WOW! Black for general spending and lounge.

FAQ

Is the FIRST WOW! Black still lifetime free?

No. As of 2025-26, the WOW! Black is a fee-paying card: ₹750 + GST joining (year 1), ₹750 + GST annual (year 2 onward). The annual fee is waived on ₹1.5 lakh of eligible annual spend. The lifetime-free positioning belongs to the older WOW (regular) card and prior versions of the WOW Black floating around the web.

Do I need a Fixed Deposit to get this card?

The FD link is optional. You can apply unsecured if you meet IDFC’s income criteria (~₹35K monthly net for entry tier). If you don’t qualify or want a higher credit limit, link a new or existing IDFC FIRST FD via the app — credit limit is typically set at up to 100% of the FD value, and the FD continues to earn standard IDFC FD interest.

What’s the actual cash-equivalent value of one IDFC FIRST RP?

Best rate: 1 RP = ₹0.50 when redeemed against travel bookings inside the IDFC FIRST Bank mobile app. Statement credit and catalog redemptions are typically half that (~₹0.25). Always redeem via the app’s travel section if you want maximum value.

Do RPs expire?

IDFC FIRST RPs do not have a fixed calendar expiry as long as the card account is active and in good standing — much friendlier than HDFC (24 months) or SBI (36 months) point expiries.

What does the welcome bundle actually include?

Lenskart Gold Max 1-year membership (₹800), 5% cashback up to ₹1,000 on first EMI within 30 days, ₹500 instant voucher on first travel booking via IDFC FIRST Bank app, up to ₹1,500 instant discount on MakeMyTrip flights / hotels / buses, flat 10% off on Mokobara, and 3-month EazyDiner Prime (₹1,095). Total advertised value ₹5,000+. Real cash value depends on whether you’d transact at those partners anyway.

How does the UPI virtual credit card work?

The card ships with a complimentary RuPay-network virtual credit card linked to the same credit limit. You can add it to any UPI app (PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm, BHIM) and pay via UPI QR / VPA / mobile-number QR. Spends earn 3 RP per ₹150 — useful in India where UPI is the dominant offline rail.

Is the 0% forex really zero, or are there hidden charges?

Per the official product page, forex markup is 0% on all international transactions. There’s no separate cross-currency fee on the markup. You may still see GST on certain ancillary fees (like cash advance interest); the markup itself is genuinely zero.

What spend categories don’t earn reward points?

Rent, fuel, wallet loads, EMI conversions, cash advances, government / utility / education payments, insurance premiums. These also typically don’t count toward the ₹1.5L annual fee waiver, so plan around them.

Where do I get the 33% / 20% bonus reward points?

33% bonus RPs on hotel bookings and 20% bonus RPs on flight bookings — both must be made through the travel section of the IDFC FIRST Bank mobile app. Third-party portal bookings (MakeMyTrip, Booking.com, etc.) do not earn the bonus, just the base earn rate.

How does this compare to the regular FIRST WOW card?

The regular WOW is a different product — typically lifetime free, FD-backed (lower minimum), with weaker reward rates and no premium perks. WOW! Black sits one tier above with paid fees, higher earn rates, lounge access, 0% forex, and the welcome bundle. Treat them as different cards rather than two variants of the same.

How does this stack up against Scapia for international travel?

Both offer 0% forex. Scapia is lifetime free and pays 20% Coins on Scapia-app travel bookings (≈ 4% cash-equivalent at 5 Coins = ₹1). WOW! Black costs ₹885/year and pays 1.77% on hotels / 1.6% on flights via IDFC app — lower percentage but Visa Signature acceptance is broader, lounge access is included, and the UPI virtual card adds India-side utility. Many users keep both: Scapia for pure forex, WOW! Black for general premium spending.
