Our score: 8.2 / 10
Annual fee: ₹5,000 + GST (₹5,900 incl)
Reward rate: 1 MR per ₹50 + milestone bonuses
Lounge: 8 domestic/year (max 2/qtr) + Priority Pass
Forex: 3.5%
Last reviewed: April 2026. No major rule changes in last 6 months. Amex Platinum Travel remains one of India’s most consistently-valuable mid-premium travel cards thanks to its milestone rewards at ₹1.9L/₹4L/₹7L and bundled Priority Pass.
TL;DR: Amex Platinum Travel is the best value mid-premium travel card in India at ₹5,000 annual fee. The standout feature is its 3-tier milestone reward structure — ₹1.9 lakh annual spend earns 7,500 bonus MR; ₹4 lakh earns an additional 10,000 MR; ₹7 lakh earns an additional 22,500 MR + Taj Experiences E-Gift Card worth ₹10,000 (all redeemable via the Platinum Travel Collection). Cumulative at ₹7L = 40,000 bonus MR + ₹10,000 Taj voucher. Combined with Priority Pass (₹8,000 value), 10,000 MR welcome, and 8 domestic lounges, a ₹7L spender nets ~₹60,000+ annual benefit on a ₹5,000 fee.
What we like
  • 3-tier milestone structure: ₹1.9L → 7,500 MR; ₹4L → additional 10,000 MR; ₹7L → additional 22,500 MR + Taj Experiences E-Gift Card worth ₹10,000 (cumulative 40,000 MR + ₹10K voucher at ₹7L spend, all on Platinum Travel Collection)
  • Free Priority Pass membership (USD 99 fee waived) — covers 1,300+ international lounges
  • 8 domestic lounge visits/year (max 2/quarter)
  • Membership Rewards points transfer to Taj Epicure, Marriott Bonvoy, Singapore KrisFlyer, BA Avios at competitive ratios
  • 10,000 MR welcome bonus on ₹15K spend within 90 days
  • Reward Multiplier 3× at 50+ partner brands (Apple, Nykaa, Tanishq, Flipkart, MMT)
  • Purchase protection + extended warranty
Watch out for
  • Amex acceptance still narrower than Visa/Mastercard in tier-2/3 cities
  • MR points excluded on fuel, utilities, insurance, cash, EMI-at-POS
  • 3.5% forex markup — uncompetitive for international spend
  • Priority Pass gives access but visits use your Amex limit (3 free/year on primary, guest charged USD 32)
  • Fuel convenience fee: 0% under ₹5K at HPCL, 1% for ₹5K+ (only HPCL)

Who the Amex Platinum Travel is for

Amex Platinum Travel is ideal if you spend ₹3-7 lakh+ per Cardmembership year, can hit at least the ₹1.9L first milestone (7,500 MR), and use the Platinum Travel Collection or MR transfers for travel redemption. Hitting the full ₹7L cumulative milestone unlocks ~₹50,000+ in combined bonus value (40,000 bonus MR + ₹10,000 Taj Experiences E-Gift Card) on top of the ₹5,000 fee — a clear winner for mid-high spenders with planned travel. Note: Amex cards are issued only in 19 specified cities (Delhi/NCR, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Pune, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Indore, Coimbatore, Chandigarh, Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Lucknow, Ludhiana, Nagpur, Nasik, Trivandrum, Mysuru).

Not the right card if: your annual spend is below ₹1.9L (you won’t hit even the first milestone, limiting the card’s value) OR you primarily shop at merchants that don’t accept Amex (tier-2/3 local stores). Amex MRCC at ₹1K fee is better at low spend volumes.

How to apply & how to cancel

Apply: Apply via americanexpress.com/in/credit-cards/platinum-travel → instant eligibility decision. Income verification via bank statements and salary slips. Final approval 3-5 business days; card delivery 7-10 days. Video-KYC available.

Cancel: Call Amex customer care (1860 500 3300 or 1800 425 5555 toll-free) or request closure via online account. Pay all dues; redeem pending MR before closure (MR points forfeited on closure). Renewal fee non-refundable after 30 days.

Final verdict

Amex Platinum Travel is the best-value mid-premium travel card in India. The milestone structure is genuinely rewarding — ₹7L spend unlocks ~₹42,500 value on a ₹5K fee. Combined with free Priority Pass and 8 domestic lounges, heavy spenders net ₹35K+/year. The Amex acceptance concern is real but has improved significantly. For mid-frequency travellers with ₹4L+ annual spend, this is a must-hold card.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Amex Platinum Travel difference from Platinum Charge?

Platinum Travel (₹5K) is a credit card with pre-set limit and revolving credit. Platinum Charge (₹66K) is a premium charge card with no preset limit but full balance due monthly. Different product tiers entirely.

Are Amex MR points taxable?

No — credit card rewards are not treated as income by CBDT and are non-taxable in India.

What if I cancel before hitting the ₹7L milestone?

Milestone bonuses are credited only after crossing each threshold within the Cardmembership year. Pro-rated bonuses are not given. Plan your spending around the anniversary year.

How does Reward Multiplier 3× work?

Log into americanexpress.com/in, activate Reward Multiplier offer for a specific brand (e.g., Nykaa), shop on that brand within the offer period, earn 3 MR per ₹50 instead of the standard 1 MR per ₹50. Offers rotate.

Is the Taj Stay voucher transferable?

Typically used on the cardholder’s booking only. Must be used within 12 months of issuance. Usable at Taj/Vivanta/SeleQtions properties (not Taj Vivanta tier restrictions).

Does Priority Pass count toward my 8 domestic lounges?

Different entitlements. The 8 domestic lounges are direct Amex benefit (DreamFolks/similar). Priority Pass is separate — mainly for international lounges (3 free visits on primary).

Can I transfer MR to IndiGo 6E Rewards?

No — IndiGo is not an MR transfer partner. Best MR transfer partners are Taj Epicure, Flying Returns (Air India), Marriott Bonvoy, Singapore KrisFlyer, BA Avios.

What are the milestone spend thresholds?

Per the current Amex India landing page, the card uses a 3-tier milestone structure (“Travel Vouchers” + “Additional Travel Vouchers”): ₹1.9 lakh annual spend → 7,500 bonus MR; ₹4 lakh → additional 10,000 bonus MR; ₹7 lakh → additional 22,500 bonus MR + Taj Experiences E-Gift Card worth ₹10,000. All MR bonuses are redeemable on the Platinum Travel Collection. Cumulative at ₹7L = 40,000 bonus MR + ₹10,000 Taj voucher. Eligible spend is retail, online, international or travel (any MR-earning category). Utilities, fuel, insurance, cash, and EMI-at-POS (effective 15 Mar 2020; merchant-terminal EMI from 3 May 2022) don’t count toward milestone accrual.

How fast are bonus MR credited?

Typically within 30-45 days of crossing the milestone threshold.

Does Amex Platinum Travel come with insurance?

Purchase protection (90 days), extended warranty (1 year), travel inconvenience (lost baggage, flight delay) on tickets booked with card. No standalone air accident / overseas medical cover unlike Infinia.

Data current as of April 2026. Credit card fees, rewards and benefits are revised periodically by issuers. Always confirm current terms with the issuer before applying.
