Industry-best finance terms: The 0.75%/month starting interest rate (9% p.a. for new applicants who maintain timely payments) is the lowest rate offered by any Indian credit card. Compare this to HDFC, SBI and Axis at 3.5–3.75% per month (42–45% p.a.) for revolving balance.

Reward structure — how the 10X system works

The IDFC FIRST Select uses a tiered reward multiplier based on spend behaviour within each billing cycle. Base earn is 1 Reward Point per ₹200 of spend (≈ 0.125% effective at ₹0.25/RP), but multipliers stack on top:

Spend TypeMultiplierEffective Reward Rate
Incremental spend ABOVE ₹20,000 in a statement cycle (any channel) + Birthday spends10X = 10 RP per ₹200≈ 1.25%
Spends till ₹20,000 in a statement cycle (any channel)3X = 3 RP per ₹200≈ 0.375%
Insurance, Utility, FASTag recharges, Railway spends (do NOT count toward ₹20K trigger)1X = 1 RP per ₹200≈ 0.125%
Fuel, EMI conversions, Cash withdrawalsNo reward points0%
Reward point value: 1 IDFC FIRST point = ₹0.25 against statement credit, or up to ₹0.40 when redeemed for vouchers / partner offers in the FIRST Reward catalogue. Points never expire — a rare feature in Indian credit cards (most issuers expire points after 24-36 months).
The 10X gameplay: A typical urban professional spending ₹40,000/month on the card earns 6X on the first ₹20,000 plus 10X on the next ₹20,000 = (₹20,000 ÷ ₹150 × 6 + ₹20,000 ÷ ₹150 × 10) × ₹0.25 = ₹533/month, or ₹6,400/year — for free. No other LTF card matches this earn rate.

Where the IDFC FIRST Select falls short

The 10X is gated by ₹20,000/cycle minimum spend — till you cross ₹20,000 of spend in a statement cycle, every spend (online or offline) earns only 3X. The 10X rate applies only on the incremental amount beyond ₹20,000 in that cycle, plus on birthday spends. Insurance and utility bill payments earn just 1X regardless. Light spenders (under ₹20K/cycle) get far less benefit than the headline rate suggests.
Real effective cashback is modest. 1 Reward Point = ₹0.25, and each redemption attracts a ₹99 + GST convenience charge. So effective rates are: ~1.25% at 10X (incremental above ₹20K/cycle + birthday), ~0.375% at 3X (first ₹20K/cycle), and ~0.125% at 1X (utility/insurance/FASTag/railway). The redemption fee further reduces net value — prefer consolidated redemptions to spread the ₹99 fee impact.
IDFC FIRST acceptance and credit-limit allocation can be conservative for first-time IDFC customers. Existing IDFC savings or salary account holders typically get higher limits.
No international lounge access on this variant. If international travel matters, step up to the IDFC FIRST Wealth (also LTF) which adds 4 international lounge visits.

Among lifetime-free cards, the IDFC FIRST Select is structurally the best value — the only LTF card with both meaningful 10X rewards and complimentary domestic lounge access (1 visit per quarter subject to ₹20K monthly spend trigger). The Wealth variant adds international lounges and a slightly lower forex rate, but only Wealth-segment customers (₹2 crore investible assets) qualify. For most spenders, Select is the obvious choice.

Bottom line — should you get it?

The IDFC FIRST Select Credit Card is one of the most underrated cards in the Indian market — and arguably the highest-value lifetime-free card available today. The combination of 10X reward points on incremental spends above ₹20,000/cycle (≈ 1.25% effective at ₹0.25/RP), 1 quarterly domestic lounge visit (on ₹20K monthly spend trigger), 1.99% forex markup, and never-expiring points puts it ahead of most cards costing ₹500–₹1,500 a year. Anyone who consistently spends ₹25,000+ per month on a credit card should hold this as a primary or strong secondary card.

Skip it only if (a) your monthly spend is below ₹15,000 — at that level, you stay in the 3X/6X tier and a category-specific cashback card (Amazon Pay ICICI for Amazon-heavy buyers, or HDFC UPI RuPay for grocery-heavy UPI users) delivers more, (b) you absolutely require international lounge access — IDFC FIRST Wealth is the upgrade path, or (c) you’re uncomfortable with IDFC FIRST as an issuer (smaller branch network than HDFC/ICICI, though customer service is well-regarded).

Verdict 9.0 / 10

A lifetime-free card that legitimately competes with mid-premium ₹1,500-fee cards on rewards and lounge access. For spenders who can hit the ₹20,000/cycle threshold, this is the easiest “yes” recommendation in our entire card lineup.
