Northeast India 12-Day Itinerary 2026 – Meghalaya, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh
Northeast India is the most underrated travel region in the country. 12 days lets you cover three states without rushing – Meghalaya’s wettest place on earth, Assam’s one-horned rhinos, and Arunachal’s high-altitude monasteries. Here’s how.
The Route + Permits
Guwahati arrival → Shillong (2N) → Cherrapunji (2N) → Kaziranga (2N) → Bhalukpong (1N) → Tawang (3N) → Guwahati exit. Total 12 nights.
Permits needed: Inner Line Permit (ILP) for Arunachal Pradesh. Apply online at arunachalilp.com 1 week before travel. Free for Indians, Rs.200 administrative fee. Approved within 24 hours. Carry printout + Aadhaar copy.
Days 1-2: Shillong
Fly into Guwahati, drive 3 hours to Shillong. Day 1: settle in Police Bazaar area, Elephant Falls, evening Cafe Shillong for live music. Day 2: Umiam Lake, Don Bosco Centre for Indigenous Cultures museum (genuinely great), Mawphlang Sacred Forest day trip.
Days 3-4: Cherrapunji (Sohra)
2-hour drive from Shillong. Day 3: Nohkalikai Falls (highest plunge waterfall in India), Mawsmai caves, Eco Park. Stay at Polo Orchid resort or budget homestays.
Day 4 – The big one: Living Root Bridges of Nongriat. 3,500 steps DOWN + 3,500 steps UP. Single Root Bridge is achievable; Double Decker Root Bridge requires staying overnight at Nongriat village (recommended – homestays Rs.500/person). Carry water, energy bars, knee support.
Days 5-6: Kaziranga National Park
Cherrapunji to Kaziranga = 8-hour drive. Break at Guwahati for lunch + Kamakhya temple stop. Stay at Wild Mahseer or IORA Resort.
Day 6: Morning elephant safari in Central Range (Rs.1,800/person, sunrise) – best chance to see rhinos. Afternoon jeep safari in Western Range (Rs.3,000/jeep). Evening tea estate walk + Assamese dinner.
Day 7: Kaziranga to Bhalukpong (4 hours)
Border crossing into Arunachal Pradesh – show ILP. Stay overnight in Bhalukpong (basic but only stop option before the long Tawang drive). River walk, evening rest.
Days 8-10: Tawang
Day 8 – the drive of your life: Bhalukpong to Tawang via Sela Pass (13,700 ft). 10 hours of switchbacks, Sela Pass lunch stop, Jaswant Garh war memorial, sunset arrival in Tawang. AMS-prone travelers – go slow, hydrate, paracetamol on standby.
Day 9: Tawang Monastery (largest in India outside Tibet – 17th century, 400 monks), Urgyen Monastery, lunch at the monastery vegetarian dining hall, afternoon Tawang War Memorial.
Day 10: Bumla Pass day trip (Indo-China border, requires special permit – book day before). 14,000 ft altitude, take it easy. Madhuri Lake on the return.
Days 11-12: Return
Tawang to Guwahati is 2 days of driving (no flights). Stop overnight at Dirang for the Dirang Dzong + Sangti Valley + apple orchards. Day 12: drive to Guwahati airport, evening flight home.

- Flights: Rs.18,000-30,000 for couple
- Self-drive 4WD or car-with-driver (12 days): Rs.55,000-80,000
- 11 nights stays (mix): Rs.40,000-65,000
- Food + permits + entries: Rs.20,000-30,000
Total: Rs.1,33,000-2,05,000 for couple’s 12 days.
Best Time
October-April. Avoid June-September (monsoon) – landslides close Tawang road for days. December-January gives snow at Sela Pass but freezing nights. Sweet spot: late October or March.
