Karnataka Heritage Itinerary 2026 — Hampi, Badami, Pattadakal & Aihole

Karnataka holds some of India’s most astonishing heritage in a compact stretch — the boulder-strewn ruins of Hampi, the cave temples of Badami, and the UNESCO-listed temple town of Pattadakal, with elegant Aihole nearby. This itinerary strings together this “cradle of temple architecture” into a rewarding 5-day heritage circuit, with transport notes between each stop. For deeper detail on the headline stop, see our Hampi travel guide.

How to reach

The circuit is usually approached from Hosapete (Hospet) for Hampi and Badami town for the cave temples. Reach Hosapete by overnight train (🚆) from Bengaluru, Goa or Hyderabad; Badami also has a railway station. Between sites, a private car/taxi (🚗) is the most efficient option as public transport is slow. Nearest airports are Hubballi and Bengaluru.

Day 1 — Arrive Hosapete, Hampi temple side 🚆/🚗

Arrive at Hosapete and transfer to Hampi (🚗 ~30 min). Begin at the still-active Virupaksha Temple and the Hampi Bazaar, then walk the riverside path to the famous Vittala Temple with its stone chariot and musical pillars. Sunset from Hemakuta Hill.

Day 2 — Hampi royal centre & sunrise

Start with sunrise from Matanga Hill, then explore the Royal Enclosure, Lotus Mahal, Elephant Stables and Queen’s Bath. Cross the river (coracle/ferry) to the quieter sights or Anjanadri Hill if time allows. A licensed guide brings the Vijayanagara history alive.

Day 3 — Hampi to Badami 🚗

Drive to Badami (🚗 ~3.5–4 hours), the former Chalukya capital. Explore the magnificent Badami cave temples carved into a red sandstone cliff above the Agastya lake — four caves dedicated to Hindu and Jain deities, with exquisite carvings. Climb to the Bhutanatha temples by the lake at golden hour.

Day 4 — Pattadakal & Aihole 🚗

Day-trip to Pattadakal (🚗 ~30–45 min), a UNESCO World Heritage Site where North and South Indian temple styles meet — the Virupaksha and Mallikarjuna temples are highlights. Continue to nearby Aihole, often called the “cradle of Indian temple architecture”, with its Durga and Lad Khan temples. Return to Badami for the night.

Day 5 — Depart 🚆

A relaxed final morning — revisit a favourite site or the Badami museum — before transferring to your train/onward journey from Badami or back via Hosapete (🚆). With an extra day, add the temples of nearby Banashankari or more time at Hampi.

Transport summary

Use trains for the long-distance legs to/from Hosapete or Badami, and a private car for the Hampi–Badami transfer and the Badami–Pattadakal–Aihole loop, since these sites are spread out and poorly served by public transport. Distances are moderate but roads are rural, so allow buffer time.

What it costs & tips

This is a low-cost heritage trip: budget travellers manage on guesthouses, local thalis and shared transport; mid-range adds a private car, a licensed guide and better hotels. Visit October–February to avoid the punishing summer heat (sites are open and shadeless). Carry water, sun protection and modest clothing for temples. Hire guides at Hampi and Badami to decode the carvings. Carry cash, as ATMs are limited at the smaller towns.

Frequently asked questions

Is 5 days enough? Yes — it comfortably covers Hampi, Badami, Pattadakal and Aihole at a steady pace.

Best time to visit? October to February for comfortable temperatures.

Do I need a car? For the Badami–Pattadakal–Aihole sites, a hired car is by far the most practical option.
