Nepal 7-Day Itinerary 2026 — Kathmandu, Pokhara & Nagarkot
Nepal packs Himalayan grandeur, ancient temple-cities and easy adventure into a compact, visa-free (for Indians) and budget-friendly trip. This 7-day itinerary covers the classic loop — Kathmandu’s heritage, the lakeside calm of Pokhara, a Himalayan sunrise at Nagarkot, and an optional wildlife add-on — with transport notes throughout. For background, see the Nepal travel guide for Indians.
How to reach Nepal
Indians can fly into Kathmandu (✈️) from many cities, or travel overland by road/bus via border points like Sunauli or Raxaul (no visa needed; carry valid ID). Within Nepal, a short scenic flight or a tourist coach/private car links Kathmandu and Pokhara.
Day 1 — Arrive Kathmandu 🛬
Land in Kathmandu, settle in the lively Thamel district. Ease in with the evening atmosphere of Boudhanath Stupa, one of the largest stupas in the world, ringed by butter lamps and pilgrims.
Day 2 — Kathmandu Valley heritage
Explore UNESCO sites: Kathmandu Durbar Square, the hilltop Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple) with city views, and the sacred Pashupatinath temple complex on the Bagmati river. If time allows, add Patan Durbar Square for its exquisite Newari architecture.
Day 3 — Kathmandu to Pokhara ✈️/🚗
Travel to Pokhara — a 25-minute flight (✈️) or a scenic 6–7 hour drive (🚗) through river valleys. This lakeside town is Nepal’s relaxation and adventure hub. Spend the evening strolling Lakeside and boating on Phewa Lake to the Tal Barahi temple.
Day 4 — Pokhara sunrise & sights
Rise early for the famous Sarangkot sunrise over the Annapurna and Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) peaks. Then visit the World Peace Pagoda, Davis Falls, the Gupteshwor cave and the International Mountain Museum. Adventurous travellers can add paragliding over the lake — a Pokhara highlight.
Day 5 — Pokhara to Kathmandu, on to Nagarkot ✈️/🚗
Return to Kathmandu (✈️/🚗), then drive about 1.5–2 hours to Nagarkot (🚗), a ridge-top village known for sweeping Himalayan panoramas. Relax and watch the sunset over the ranges from your hotel terrace.
Day 6 — Nagarkot sunrise, Bhaktapur 🚗
Catch the Nagarkot sunrise (on clear days, distant Everest may be visible), then drive down to the beautifully preserved medieval city of Bhaktapur (🚗) — its Durbar Square, pottery square and Newari streets are a highlight. Return to Kathmandu for the night.
Day 7 — Kathmandu, depart 🛫
Final morning for souvenir shopping in Thamel (singing bowls, pashmina, tea) before your transfer to the airport (🛫). With an extra 2–3 days, swap in Chitwan National Park for a jungle safari (rhinos, birds) — a superb wildlife add-on reached by drive or short flight.
Transport summary
The trip mixes a short flight or scenic drive between Kathmandu and Pokhara with private car/taxi for valley sights and Nagarkot. Roads are winding, so allow time. Flights save a half-day each way to Pokhara.
What it costs & tips
Nepal is very affordable for Indians, with no visa and rupee-friendly costs (Indian currency is widely usable, though carry smaller notes and check accepted denominations). Budget travellers do it cheaply on tourist buses and guesthouses; mid-range adds flights, private cars and better hotels. Carry layers for early mornings, respect temple etiquette (remove shoes, ask before photographing rituals), and book Pokhara flights and paragliding ahead in peak season.
