The Canara RuPay Select is Canara Bank’s premium RuPay-network card, positioned squarely at users who want UPI-enabled credit (RuPay’s unique capability in India) combined with modest lounge and travel perks. It’s classic PSU bank pricing — low fees, moderate benefits, but the UPI-on-credit-card hook makes it more interesting than the numbers alone suggest.
Fees and charges
| Joining fee | ₹500 + GST |
| Annual fee | ₹500 + GST |
| Welcome benefit | 5,000 reward points on ₹5,000 spend in 60 days |
| Annual fee waiver | Spend ₹2 lakh / year |
| Foreign markup | 3.5% + GST (poor for international travel) |
| Finance charges | 3.20% per month / ~38% APR |
How rewards work
- Retail spend: 2 reward points per ₹100 (~0.5% effective)
- UPI transactions via credit card: 2 reward points per ₹100 (~0.5%) up to ₹500 RP/month cap
- Grocery, departmental store spend: 4 reward points per ₹100 (~1%)
- Excluded: fuel, utilities, wallet loads, EMI conversions, rent
- Redemption: 1 RP = ₹0.25 in catalog; cashback at the same ratio
The UPI credit hook
RuPay is the only Indian card network that allows credit card payments via UPI (linking your credit card to any UPI app). For merchants who accept UPI but not credit cards — street vendors, small shops, auto drivers — RuPay lets you earn credit card rewards on those transactions. That’s a structural edge Visa and Mastercard credit cards simply can’t offer.
Practical value: if ₹50,000/year of your UPI spend is at merchants who don’t accept regular cards, you’re earning ~₹250 extra per year in rewards that wouldn’t otherwise exist. Modest but real.
What’s included
- 2 domestic lounge visits per quarter (8/year) via RuPay lounge program
- 1% fuel surcharge waiver (capped ₹100/cycle)
- Air-accident insurance ₹5 lakh
What’s missing
- No international lounge access
- No concierge, no golf, no premium insurance
- Reward rate is modest (~0.5–1%) vs. private-bank entry cards
- Canara Bank app + online experience trail private-sector banks
Spend level where the fee pays off
| Annual fee + GST | ₹590 |
| Welcome benefit (year 1) | ₹1,250 (5,000 RP) |
| Lounge value (year 1, 8 visits) | ~₹6,000 |
| Net cost year 1 | Net positive by ~₹6,660 |
Vs. Axis ACE / HDFC MoneyBack+
Both private-bank competitors offer higher reward rates (Axis ACE 2% universal cashback, HDFC MoneyBack+ 5% on partner brands). Canara’s edge is: (1) 8 free lounge visits at this fee tier, and (2) UPI-on-credit-card through RuPay. If you genuinely use UPI for daily small-ticket spend, the RuPay hook alone can offset the weaker reward rate.
Who this card is for
- Best fit: existing Canara Bank customers wanting a companion credit card
- Best fit: users in tier-2/tier-3 cities where Canara has stronger presence than private banks
- Best fit: heavy UPI users at small merchants who don’t accept regular credit cards
- Skip if: you travel internationally (3.5% forex is steep)
- Skip if: your spend is predominantly online — SBI SimplyCLICK or Axis ACE beat this
