TL;DR: HDFC Infinia Metal remains one of India’s top-tier super-premium cards, but the 2026 rule changes have reshaped it significantly. The unlimited Priority Pass lounges, 2% forex and 10× SmartBuy engine still make it compelling for HNI travellers. However, the new ₹18L spend / ₹50L AUM retention requirement + SmartBuy redemption caps mean this card only works economically for genuinely high-spend users.

Verify with your HDFC Relationship Manager.

780+ with no defaults in last 24 months. HDFC internal scoring weighs relationship tenure and banking balance history.

Existing HDFC Preferred/Imperia customers with ₹30L+ in banking balances typically receive pre-approved offers. Industry estimates point to ₹40-60L+ annual income as typical target, though HDFC does not publish this.

Rewards structure

The Infinia earning structure has two layers. Base earn is 5 reward points per ₹150 on retail spends — that’s a 3.3% headline rate at 1 point = ₹1 on SmartBuy, or 1.65% at ₹0.50 statement credit. The second layer is SmartBuy acceleration (per SmartBuy T&C): 10× points on hotels, 5× on flights, 3× on Gyftr vouchers, capped at 15,000 bonus points per billing cycle. Gyftr voucher earning was revised downward from 5× to 3× in a recent SmartBuy update. Rates can be revised by HDFC periodically — check the SmartBuy portal for current multipliers before relying on them.

Overall cycle cap: Maximum 2,00,000 Reward Points can be earned in a statement cycle across all categories (per Infinia RP T&C).

Redemption caps (effective 1 Feb 2023): Cashback / statement-credit capped at 50,000 RP per calendar month. SmartBuy flight/hotel bookings + airmiles transfer capped at 1,50,000 RP per calendar month. Tanishq vouchers capped at 50,000 RP per quarter (from 1 Oct 2024). Apple products limited to 1 per calendar quarter (from 1 Oct 2024). Maximum 70% of travel / Apple / Tanishq booking value redeemable via RP; remainder via card.

Airmiles transfer (from 15 Jan 2024): 2 RP = 1 partner mile for Turkish Miles & Smiles, Accor Live Limitless and Avianca Life Miles (devaluation). Other partners — check current SmartBuy partner list.

Category caps & exclusions: Utility spends capped at 2,000 RP/month (from 1 Sep 2024); Telecom spends capped at 2,000 RP/month (from 1 Sep 2024); Insurance spends capped at 10,000 RP/month (from 1 Jul 2025). Zero RP on: fuel (1% surcharge waiver up to ₹1K/cycle applies), wallet loads, rent / property management / government transactions (from 1 Jan 2023), EasyEMI / Smart EMI / Dial-An-EMI, payment of card fees / charges, cash advances. Education payments via 3rd-party apps (CRED / Cheq / MobiKwik etc, from 1 Sep 2024) earn zero RP; direct payments to college/school websites or POS still earn. RP validity: 3 years from accumulation; 365-day card inactivity nullifies RP.

Welcome benefits & milestones

Welcome benefit (Year 1): 12,500 Reward Points credited on payment of joining fee, plus complimentary Club Marriott membership for the first year (per HDFC Infinia landing page).

Travel benefit: Book stay for 3 nights & pay for 2 at participating ITC hotels (per HDFC Infinia landing page — verify current T&C before planning).

Renewal / retention: HDFC may review Infinia benefits at renewal based on spend and banking relationship. Verify with your HDFC Relationship Manager before renewal at renewal or remove the cardholder from the Infinia programme. Earlier milestone-based retention vouchers (like the ₹8L Taj voucher) are not part of this programme.

Who the HDFC Infinia Metal is for

Infinia Metal is for professionals or business owners who can commit to ₹18L+ annual spend (the new Apr 2026 retention threshold) OR hold ₹50L+ banking balances with HDFC. You should also actively use the SmartBuy portal for flights/hotels and travel internationally 4+ times a year.

Not the right card if: your annual card spend is below ₹18L, and you don’t have ₹50L+ AUM with HDFC. Under these conditions, you’ll likely face downgrade in 2027 and lose Infinia benefits. Consider HDFC Diners Black (₹10K fee, similar engine) or Regalia Gold (₹2,500) instead.

How to apply & how to cancel

Apply: Infinia is invitation-preferred. HDFC Preferred/Imperia customers receive pre-approved offers in NetBanking. Public applications via hdfcbank.com → Cards → Infinia are accepted but approval rates are 30-40% outside relationship pool. Eligibility pre-check is soft-pull; final decision 3-5 business days; delivery 7-10 days.

Cancel: Call PhoneBanking (1800 202 6161) or request closure in writing at any HDFC branch. Clear all dues first. Unused reward points are forfeited at closure — redeem before cancelling. Renewal fee already debited is non-refundable after 30 days of renewal date.

Final verdict

HDFC Infinia Metal is still among India’s best premium cards on raw benefits, but the April 2026 retention rule change has meaningfully shifted its target audience to genuinely high-spending HNI users. If you can clear ₹18L annually or maintain ₹50L+ AUM with HDFC, the unlimited lounges + 2% forex + SmartBuy engine are excellent. Below that threshold, you’ll likely face downgrade — consider stepping down to Diners Black (₹10K) proactively instead.

Frequently asked questions

Does HDFC apply retention criteria on Infinia?

HDFC may review Infinia benefits at renewal based on cardholder spend and banking relationship. The current Infinia RP T&C (Updated 14 Jan 2026) does not publish explicit retention thresholds. Some cardholders report informal spend benchmarks (around ₹18 lakh in anniversary year) or relationship benchmarks (around ₹50 lakh+ in banking balances) used by HDFC internally. For your specific renewal, verify with your HDFC Relationship Manager.

What does “downgrade” mean practically?

HDFC would move the cardholder to a less-premium card (typically Diners Black, Diners Privilege or Regalia Gold). Credit limit may carry over; benefits reduce. Exact mechanism depends on HDFC internal policy at that time.

Is the SmartBuy 10× still active?

Yes — SmartBuy accelerated reward points is active (per SmartBuy T&C). Current multipliers: 10× on hotels, 5× on flights, 3× on Gyftr vouchers, capped at 15,000 bonus points per billing cycle. Gyftr voucher earning was revised down from 5× to 3× in a recent update. The overall Infinia statement-cycle earning cap (across all categories) is 2,00,000 RP. Rates are subject to periodic revision by HDFC — check the SmartBuy portal for current multipliers.

What are the RP redemption caps?

Per the Infinia RP T&C (effective since 1 Feb 2023): cashback / statement-credit redemption is capped at 50,000 RP per calendar month. SmartBuy flight/hotel bookings + airmiles transfer are capped at 1,50,000 RP per calendar month. From 1 Oct 2024: Tanishq voucher redemption is capped at 50,000 RP per calendar quarter; Apple products limited to 1 per quarter. Maximum 70% of travel / Apple / Tanishq booking value can be redeemed via RP; remainder via card.

Is Infinia still invitation-only?

Yes — primarily offered to HDFC Preferred/Imperia customers. Public applications accepted but approval rates are lower.

Can I downgrade Infinia to a cheaper card proactively?

Yes — HDFC allows downgrades to Diners Black (₹10K), Diners Privilege (₹2,500), or Regalia Gold (₹2,500). Tenure and credit limit carry over. Downgrade before renewal if you know you won’t hit ₹18L spend.

Do reward points transfer to airline miles?

Yes — 1:1 to Flying Returns (Air India, post-Vistara merger), 1:1 to Marriott Bonvoy, 2:1 to Singapore KrisFlyer. Minimum 1,000 points per transfer.

Is the Taj welcome voucher still being given?

Yes — the Year 1 ₹12,500 Taj Stay voucher on joining fee payment continues. However, earlier milestone-based Taj vouchers (e.g. at ₹8L spend) are not part of the 2026-27 retention programme.

Does Infinia support UPI?

No — Infinia is a Visa card. Direct RuPay-on-UPI is not available. You can link via Google Pay/PhonePe for Visa-accepting online merchants.

How does 2% forex actually save money?

On ₹5L international spend/year, saving 1.5% vs 3.5% cards = ₹7,500 savings. Adds ₹8-15K/year for heavy international spenders.
