Meghalaya Travel Guide 2026 — Living Root Bridges, Dawki & Cherrapunji
Meghalaya — the “abode of clouds” — is India’s misty northeast at its most magical: living root bridges, crystal rivers, sky-high waterfalls, and some of the wettest, greenest landscapes on earth. Here’s how to plan a Meghalaya trip around Shillong, Cherrapunji, and Dawki.
Best time to visit
October to April offers clearer skies and the famous turquoise waters at Dawki. The monsoon (June–September) is dramatic — thundering waterfalls and thick mist — but heavy rain can disrupt plans. For the iconic clear Umngot River, aim for winter and early spring.
Top experiences
- Double Decker Living Root Bridge (Nongriat): A steep ~3,500-step hike near Cherrapunji to the famous bioengineered bridge — go early.
- Dawki (Umngot River): Boat over water so clear the boat seems to float on air.
- Nohkalikai Falls: India’s tallest plunge waterfall, near Cherrapunji.
- Mawlynnong: “Asia’s cleanest village,” with a sky walk and root bridges nearby.
- Shillong: Café culture, Ward’s Lake, and live music in the “rock capital of India.”
- Mawsmai & Arwah caves: Limestone caves with stalactites and fossils.
Suggested 4-day route
- Day 1: Arrive Guwahati → drive to Shillong (3 hrs); evening at Police Bazaar.
- Day 2: Shillong → Cherrapunji; Nohkalikai Falls, Mawsmai Cave, Seven Sisters viewpoint.
- Day 3: Nongriat root-bridge trek (full day, demanding).
- Day 4: Dawki + Mawlynnong, then return to Shillong/Guwahati.
Getting there & around
The gateway is Guwahati (Assam), the nearest major airport and railhead, about 3 hours from Shillong. Meghalaya is best explored by hired car or shared taxi; public transport is limited between sights.
Practical tips
- The Nongriat trek is strenuous (thousands of steps down and back up) — wear good shoes and start early.
- Carry cash; connectivity and ATMs are patchy outside Shillong.
- Respect the matrilineal Khasi culture and village rules.
- Pack a rain jacket year-round — this is one of the rainiest places on earth.
