Spiti Valley Circuit 2026 – High-Altitude Desert in Himachal

Spiti is India’s most undiscovered wonder – high-altitude cold desert with 1,000-year-old monasteries, mud villages, and roads carved into mountainsides. Most of India hasn’t been here. Here’s how.

The Circuit

Open circuit: Shimla → Sangla → Chitkul → Nako → Tabo → Kaza → Kibber → Manali (over Kunzum Pass). 10 days. Acclimatization built into the route – elevation gradually rises from 2,200m to 4,587m.

Why this direction: Shimla-to-Manali (rather than reverse) gives gradual altitude gain. Reverse direction = altitude sickness risk.

Best Time

June-September: Both road entrances open. Best months July, August.

October-May: Only Shimla-Kaza side accessible (Manali side closed). Winter Spiti is a different beast – snow, sub-zero temperatures, fewer travelers but otherworldly beauty.

How to Travel

  • Self-drive 4WD: Rent in Manali/Shimla, Rs.3,500-5,500/day. Mahindra Scorpio or Thar recommended.
  • Hired taxi with driver: Rs.4,500-6,500/day all-inclusive. Driver knows roads, safer.
  • Public buses (HRTC): Cheapest (Rs.500-1,000 per leg) but slow, infrequent in remote sections.
  • Bike trip: Royal Enfield Himalayan or 350. Best experience but most demanding.
  • Pre-organized group tour: Rs.25,000-40,000/person for 10 days with everything included

Day-by-Day Highlights

  • Day 1-2: Shimla overnight, drive to Sangla Valley, stay riverside
  • Day 3: Chitkul (India’s last inhabited village before Tibet border, 3,450m). Sleep at 3,450m for first altitude exposure.
  • Day 4: Drive Sangla to Nako (4,000m) via Khab. Lake visit.
  • Day 5: Nako to Tabo (3,280m) via Geu (mummy village – 500-year-old mummy of a monk on display, Rs.30 entry). Tabo monastery (1,019 AD – oldest in Himalayas).
  • Day 6: Tabo to Kaza (3,800m) via Dhankar monastery (perched on cliff). Stay in Kaza 3 nights.
  • Day 7: Day trip from Kaza – Key monastery (most photographed in Spiti), Kibber village (4,205m, world’s highest motorable village), Chicham bridge (highest in Asia).
  • Day 8: Pin Valley day trip – lush green contrast to barren Spiti. Mud village stay.
  • Day 9: Komik (4,587m – highest motorable village in India) + Langza (Buddha statue + fossil hunting) + Hikkim (highest post office, send postcards).
  • Day 10: Kaza to Manali via Kunzum Pass (4,551m) and Atal Tunnel. 10-hour drive.

Acclimatization Notes

2,200m (Shimla) → 3,450m (Chitkul) → 3,280m (Tabo) → 3,800m (Kaza) → 4,500m+ excursions. The Shimla-to-Manali direction builds altitude tolerance over 5 days, drastically reducing AMS risk. Diamox 250mg recommended from Day 2.

Budget for Couple, 10 Days

  • Flights/train to Shimla: Rs.6,000-12,000 couple
  • 4WD with driver (10 days): Rs.50,000-65,000
  • 9 nights stays (homestays + guesthouses): Rs.18,000-35,000

  • Manali-home transport: Rs.5,000-8,000
