Kashmir 7-Day Itinerary 2026 — Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam & Sonmarg
Kashmir earns its “paradise on earth” reputation the moment you arrive — mirror-still lakes dotted with shikaras, snow-laced mountains, saffron fields, and meadows that roll on forever. This 7-day itinerary covers the classic Kashmir Valley loop from Srinagar, taking in Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonmarg, with notes on the drives between each base. For background, see the full Kashmir travel guide.
How to reach Kashmir
Most travellers fly into Srinagar airport (✈️) from Delhi and other metros. You can also take a train to Jammu and drive up (a long, scenic journey). This plan is built around flying into and out of Srinagar, using a private car/taxi (🚗) for the valley circuit.
Day 1 — Arrive Srinagar 🛬, Dal Lake
Land in Srinagar and transfer to a houseboat or hotel by Dal Lake. Ease in with a sunset shikara ride across the lake, past floating gardens and markets. Evening at leisure on the houseboat — a quintessential Kashmir experience.
Day 2 — Srinagar sightseeing
Explore the Mughal gardens — Nishat, Shalimar and Chashme Shahi — set against the lake and hills. Visit the Hazratbal shrine and the old city’s Jamia Masjid, browse Kashmiri handicrafts (pashmina, walnut wood, papier-mâché), and ride the Dal again at golden hour. Optional: the hilltop Shankaracharya Temple for valley views.
Day 3 — Srinagar to Gulmarg 🚗
Drive about 1.5–2 hours to Gulmarg (🚗 ~50 km), the famous meadow-and-ski town. Ride the Gulmarg Gondola — one of the world’s highest cable cars — up toward Apharwat Peak for snow and panoramic views (two phases). In season, try skiing or a snow walk; in summer, enjoy the green meadows, the golf course and pony rides. Overnight in Gulmarg or return to Srinagar.
Day 4 — Gulmarg to Pahalgam 🚗
Drive to Pahalgam (🚗 ~4–5 hours via Srinagar bypass), the lush “valley of shepherds” on the Lidder river. Stop en route at saffron fields (near Pampore) and an apple-orchard belt. Evening riverside stroll in Pahalgam.
Day 5 — Pahalgam valleys
Spend the day exploring Pahalgam’s side valleys (often by local taxi as private cars are restricted on some stretches): the meadow of Baisaran, the scenic Betaab Valley, Aru Valley and Chandanwari. Pony rides, short walks and riverside picnics fill the day. Pahalgam is also a base for the Amarnath Yatra in season.
Day 6 — Pahalgam to Sonmarg, back to Srinagar 🚗
Drive toward Sonmarg, the “meadow of gold” and gateway to the Zoji La pass and the Thajiwas Glacier (reached by pony or a short trek). Enjoy the alpine scenery, then return to Srinagar for the night. (If timing is tight, Sonmarg can be a dedicated day trip from Srinagar instead.)
Day 7 — Srinagar, depart 🛫
A relaxed final morning — last-minute shopping for dry fruits, saffron and pashmina, or another short shikara ride — before your transfer to the airport (🛫).
Transport summary
The circuit runs on a private taxi, with local union taxis required for certain hill stretches (Gulmarg gondola base, Pahalgam side valleys, Sonmarg glacier). Distances are short but mountain roads are slow, so plan relaxed days. No internal flights are needed.
What it costs & tips
A comfortable mid-range week (houseboat/hotels, private taxi, meals, gondola and pony rides) is very achievable; budget travellers can trim with shared transport and simpler stays. Carry warm layers year-round (mountain points are cold even in summer), sun protection for snow glare, and cash for ponies and small vendors. Check current local conditions and advisories before travel, and book the Gulmarg gondola early in peak season. Respect local customs and dress modestly at shrines.
