Munnar Travel Guide 2026 – Tea Estates, Best Stays, Day Trips, Realistic Budget

Munnar is Kerala’s answer to a hill station – 1,600 meters elevation, rolling tea estates as far as the eye can see, and weather that stays under 25 degrees year-round. For Indian travelers it’s a 3-night sweet spot – enough to slow down, not so long that you run out of things to do. Here is everything you need.

How to Reach Munnar

By air: Cochin airport (130km, 4-hour drive) or Madurai airport (160km, 5-hour drive). Cochin has more flight options. Round-trip from major Indian cities: Rs.6,000-15,000.

By road from Cochin: Pre-arranged taxi Rs.3,500-5,500 one-way. Or KSRTC bus to Munnar (Rs.250, 5 hours).

By rail: Aluva (closest, Cochin suburb) or Ernakulam stations, then road.

Best Time to Visit

  • December-February: Peak season. Clear weather, 5-15 degrees mornings. Most expensive (book 1 month ahead).
  • March-May: Warmer (15-25 degrees) but tea plants are at their greenest. Less crowded.
  • June-August: Monsoon. Everything is green, waterfalls full, but you’ll get wet. Resorts offer 30-40% discount.
  • September-November: Post-monsoon sweet spot. Crisp, clear, fewer crowds. Best photography.

Where to Stay

  • Munnar town – Most hotels, restaurants, market. Convenient but less scenic. Rs.2,000-5,000/night.
  • Chithirapuram – 8km from town, colonial-era estate bungalows, quieter. Rs.3,500-8,000/night.
  • Devikulam – 7km, near a lake, lovely views. Rs.4,000-10,000/night.
  • Anachal/Pallivasal – Slightly farther out, near tea estates. Most “estate stay” options. Rs.5,000-15,000/night.
  • Premium estate stays – Windermere Estate, Tea Sanctuary, Tall Trees – Rs.12,000-25,000/night, but worth it for honeymoon/anniversary.

What to Do

  • Tata Tea Museum – Tea processing tour, history of Munnar’s tea industry. Rs.150 entry, 2 hours. Good for first-timers.
  • Eravikulam National Park – Nilgiri Tahr (mountain goat) habitat, panoramic views, easy walking trail. Open July-January (closed Feb-March for calving). Rs.150 entry.
  • Top Station – 32km from Munnar, on Tamil Nadu border. Highest viewpoint in the area, sometimes you’re above the clouds. Best at sunrise or just before sunset.
  • Mattupetty Dam – Boating on the reservoir, often paired with Echo Point.
  • Kundala Lake – 20km from town, less crowded than Mattupetty, beautiful for couples.
  • Anamudi Peak trek – Highest peak in South India (2,695m). Permit required, only 100 trekkers per day. Book 2 weeks ahead via Kerala Forest Department.
  • Kolukkumalai Tea Estate – Highest organic tea estate in the world (2,200m). Jeep ride uphill, sunrise tour. Bookable as a half-day from Munnar.
  • Spice tour – Cardamom, pepper, vanilla plantations. Rs.300-500 with guide. Educational and fragrant.

3-Night Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive midday from Cochin. Check in, lunch, afternoon visit Tata Tea Museum, evening leisurely walk through town market.

Day 2: Early start to Eravikulam National Park (gates open 7am, queues form), Mattupetty Dam + Echo Point + Kundala Lake. Lunch packed. Evening at hotel, optional Kalaripayattu martial arts show in town (Rs.350).

Day 4: Slow morning, optional last tea estate walk. Drive back to Cochin by lunch. Fly out evening.

Budget for 3 Nights (Couple)

  • Cochin return flights: Rs.12,000-25,000 for 2
  • Cochin-Munnar return taxi: Rs.7,000-10,000
  • 3 nights mid-range hotel: Rs.9,000-18,000
  • Food (mostly veg, mix of restaurants): Rs.3,000-5,500
  • Activities, entries, jeep tours: Rs.4,000-7,500
  • Local transport day trips: Rs.3,500-5,500

Total: Rs.38,500-71,500 for a couple’s 3-night Munnar trip.

Combining Munnar With Other Kerala Stops

Most travelers pair Munnar with one of: Thekkady (wildlife sanctuary, 3 hours), Alleppey (backwater houseboats, 5 hours), or Kochi (Fort Kochi heritage, 4 hours). A classic Kerala loop is: Kochi (2 nights) – Munnar (2 nights) – Thekkady (1 night) – Alleppey (1 night houseboat) – back to Kochi. 7 nights total, Rs.85,000-1,40,000 for a couple including everything.
