SBI BPCL Octane Credit Card: Fees, Rewards & Real Value

The SBI BPCL Octane is one of the highest-yielding fuel cards in India for drivers who fill up exclusively at BPCL pumps. The headline reward rate of 25× points (effectively about 6.25% value back) is real, but it’s narrowly scoped — outside fuel and a small set of bonus categories, the card is average. Here’s the math.

Fees and charges

Joining fee₹1,499 + GST
Annual fee (2nd year onwards)₹1,499 + GST
Annual fee waiverSpend ₹2 lakh / year
Welcome benefit6,000 reward points (worth ~₹1,500 in BPCL fuel)
Finance charges3.5% per month / ~42% APR

How rewards actually work

  • BPCL fuel: 25 reward points per ₹100 (about 6.25% value back when redeemed for BPCL fuel; ~4% as vouchers)
  • Departmental stores, groceries, dining, movies: 10 reward points per ₹100 (~2.5% value)
  • Everything else: 1 reward point per ₹100 (~0.25%)

1 reward point = ₹0.25 when redeemed for BPCL fuel. Other redemption options (vouchers, cash credit) yield ~₹0.20–₹0.22.

Surcharge waiver — read the fine print

The card waives the 1% fuel surcharge at BPCL pumps on transactions between ₹500 and ₹4,000. The waiver is capped at ₹100 per statement cycle — so practical benefit is up to ₹1,200 / year if you spend ~₹10,000 / month on BPCL fuel.

Spend level where the fee pays off

Annual fee + GST₹1,768
Welcome benefit (year 1 only)₹1,500
Net cost (year 1)₹268
Break-even on rewards (year 1)₹4,300 BPCL spend
Break-even (year 2 onwards, no welcome)₹28,300 BPCL spend

Who this card is for

  • Best fit: car-owners doing ₹30,000+ annual BPCL fuel spend who can’t (or won’t) switch fuel brand
  • Skip if: you fill up at multiple brands (use the IOCL HDFC RuPay or HPCL ICICI Super Saver)
  • Also skip: if your total card spend is under ₹1.5L/year — the ₹2L waiver target won’t hit
Verdict: Best-in-class for BPCL loyalists. Bonus categories on groceries and dining also beat most basic cards. The 6.25% effective return on fuel is real but locked to one brand — that’s the trade-off.
