Coorg & Wayanad Itinerary 2026 — 6-Day Western Ghats Road Trip
Two of South India’s greenest highlands sit just a few hours apart — Karnataka’s coffee-scented Coorg and Kerala’s misty Wayanad. This 6-day itinerary combines them into one lush Western Ghats road trip of plantations, waterfalls, wildlife and easy treks, with drive notes between each base. It’s an ideal nature escape from Bengaluru or Kochi.
How to reach
Start from Bengaluru or Mysuru for Coorg, or Kozhikode (Calicut) for Wayanad. The trip runs on a private car/taxi (🚗); Coorg and Wayanad are roughly 3–4 hours apart via scenic ghat roads. Nearest airports are Bengaluru, Mysuru, Mangaluru and Kannur/Kozhikode.
Day 1 — Arrive Coorg (Madikeri) 🚗
Drive to Coorg and settle near Madikeri. Ease in with Raja’s Seat for sunset, the Madikeri Fort and the Omkareshwara Temple, and a stroll through town.
Day 2 — Coorg plantations & falls
Visit Abbey Falls, walk a coffee/spice plantation (many stays offer estate tours), see the golden Namdroling (Golden Temple) monastery at Bylakuppe, and Dubare Elephant Camp on the river. Evening at your estate stay.
Day 3 — Coorg to Wayanad 🚗
A scenic drive to Wayanad (🚗 ~3.5–4 hours). En route or on arrival, visit the prehistoric Edakkal Caves with their ancient petroglyphs. Settle into a plantation resort near Vythiri/Kalpetta.
Day 4 — Wayanad nature day
Chase waterfalls at Soochipara (Sentinel Rock), see the Banasura Sagar Dam (boating) and Pookode Lake, and enjoy a plantation walk. Birdwatchers and nature lovers are spoilt here.
Day 5 — Wayanad trek or safari 🥾
Start early for the Chembra Peak trek to its heart-shaped lake (permit required) or a morning safari at the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary (Muthanga/Tholpetty) for chances of elephants and deer. Relaxed estate evening.
Day 6 — Depart 🚗
A slow final morning among the estates before driving out to Kozhikode (for Kerala onward travel) or back toward Mysuru/Bengaluru.
Transport summary
This is a private-car road trip — both regions have spread-out sights on hilly roads with little public transport. Start treks and safaris early (fixed slots, afternoon clouds). Allow buffer time on the ghat sections.
What it costs & tips
Budget travellers manage with homestays, local meals and shared transport; mid-range adds plantation resorts, a private car, treks and a safari. Visit October–May (post-monsoon greenery is gorgeous; monsoon brings leeches and slippery trails). Carry layers, rain protection and sturdy shoes. Book Chembra permits and safaris ahead, and carry cash for remote spots.
