Leh Ladakh Bike Trip 2026 – Complete 14-Day Guide, Route, Permits, Budget
The Leh Ladakh bike trip is the rite of passage for Indian adventure travelers. 14 days, three of India’s highest motorable passes, and landscapes that don’t look like Earth. Here’s how to do it without dying.
The Classic Route
Delhi → Manali (2N acclimatization) → Manali-Sarchu (Rohtang or Atal Tunnel) → Sarchu-Leh → Leh acclimatization (2N) → Khardung La day trip → Nubra Valley (2N) → Pangong Tso (1N) → Leh → Tso Moriri (1N) → Leh → Srinagar via Kargil → Srinagar exit.
Best Time
June 15-September 15. Highway opens after winter snow clears. July and August are peak. Roads close November-May.
Bike Choice
- Royal Enfield Classic 350/500 – Most common, reliable in high altitude, easy mechanics
- RE Himalayan – Better suited for off-road sections, more comfortable
- KTM Duke 390/Adventure – Modern, less suited to rough terrain
- Yamaha FZ/Pulsar 220 – Avoid, will struggle at altitude
Self-Drive vs Rental
Rent in Manali/Leh: Rs.1,500-2,500/day for Classic 350 (includes 2 helmets). Limited to local routes in some rental contracts.
Ride your own from Delhi: Total ride = 4,500km. Bike service before departure mandatory. More flexibility but exhausting.
Drop bike at airport: Many operators allow ride one-way Manali-Leh, fly back. Adds Rs.5,000-8,000 to bike rental.
Permits Required
- Inner Line Permit (ILP) for Pangong, Nubra, Tso Moriri – apply at Leh DC office, Rs.400-600
- Wildlife fee for Pangong area – Rs.300
- Carry 4 passport photos + Aadhaar copies + multiple permit photocopies
Altitude Management
Leh is at 3,500m. Khardung La at 5,359m. AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) kills people every year. Non-negotiable: 2 full nights in Leh BEFORE any high-altitude ride. Carry Diamox (start 1 day before reaching Leh, 250mg twice daily). Listen to your body – headache, nausea, breathlessness = descend immediately.
Fuel Stops
- Last pump before Sarchu: Tandi (365km from Manali, 5km after Keylong)
- Sarchu has no fuel – carry 5L jerry can
- Leh has 2 pumps
- Pangong route: fill up at Karu (40km before Tangtse), no fuel beyond
- Nubra route: Khalsar has fuel
Budget for 14 Days
